Catholicism and horror go hand in hand, but don’t take that as a critical statement directed at the Church — I’m just talking about the movies. Looking to play upon centuries of secrecy comes The Vatican Tapes, a new horror film by Mark Neveldine hoping to play along with the spirit of The Exorcist. Coming a week after audiences will see Michael Peña kill it in Ant-Man (seriously, he steals the show), the versatile actor takes on the role of Father Lozano, a priest forced to face evil personified. As the film gets closer to its July 24th release date, a new featurette has been released to delve into the mythology behind The Vatican Tapes. So get down upon your knees, fiddle with your rosaries; bow your head with great respect and genuflect, genuflect, genuflect.
The official synopsis for The Vatican Tapes:
THE VATICAN TAPES follows the ultimate battle between good and evil- God versus Satan. Angela Holmes is ordinary 27-year- old until she begins to have a devastating effect on anyone close, causing serious injury and death. Holmes is examined and possession is suspected, but when the Vatican is called upon to exorcise the demon, the possession proves to be an ancient satanic force more powerful than ever imagined. It’s all up to Father Lozano (MICHAEL PEÑA) to wage war for more than just Angela’s soul, but for the world as we know it.
