The Guardians of the Galaxy have been featured in comics from as far back as 1969, but the modern team that formed in the aftermath of 2008’s Annihilation: Conquest event has proven to be infinitely popular, especially since the film that took the mainstream, and even many comic fans, by surprise. Now the team is at the height of its popularity, so what better time to create a spin-off title?
Dan Abnett is returning to the Guardians of the Galaxy in December. Sort of. Marvel has announced the Guardians spin-off; Guardians of Infinity. This new series will feature past and future Guardians teams including the original team, the modern team made famous by the aforementioned smash hit film, as well as a new team, Guardians 1000.
Fan-favorite Abnett will be writing with Carlo Barberi on art duties, with back-up stories by some of comics’ finest creators. The first issue features a Rocket Raccoon/The Thing team-up story by Jason Latour and Jim Cheung.
Here is the official solicitation:

Defending the galaxy is a good gig, but Drax isn’t thrilled with the combat hours (not enough of them) and Rocket isn’t thrilled with the compensation (not enough of it). They’re off on an adventure to supplement both, and Groot is happy to come along. But instead of the perks they want, they’re about to get more trouble than they can handle. Good thing the Guardians 3000 are on hand to help! But what about…THE GUARDIANS 1000??!!
Also in this issue, Latour and Cheung tell a one-off story of Ben Grimm and Rocket Raccoon, stuck on a planet where culture is based on Earth-style professional wrestling…but the stakes are life and death! THIS AIN’T KAYFABE, BROTHER!
Barberi posted this video of himself drawing the book yesterday on Instagram. The Guardians are in good hands, for sure.
